Letter on ivory lined paper embossed with design on top of carrier pigeon and for "The U.S. Christian Commission, Sends this sheet as the Soldier's Messenger to his home, Let it haste to those who wait for tidings." "General Sherman's Army" is crossed out. With ivory paper envelope, and yellow lining, addressed to Mrs. Lucy A. Holmes ("Mother"), Mystic Bridge, CT, from son Charlie, 3rd RI Regt., ? Div., 10th Army Corps, dated April 14th, 1865, postmarked April 19th, from Beaufort, SC, with a 3 cent postage stamp. Note: this was written in the week following the end of the Civil War.
