View, ca. 1935, of Civil War Monument or Soldier's Monument at Broadway and East Main St. intersection looking east. This section of East Main and Broadway was improved after WWI as part of a federal project to improve Route 1 from Maine to Florida. The Stephen Palmer House (b.?), 23 Broadway is in the center foreground. (The houses behind are on East Main St.) Stephen and his wife Julia Palmer lived in the house from 1912 - 1924, he having died by 1924. Sometime later it became a boarding house. After WWII the house was torn down to make way for a bank building. The signs, top to bottom, are for New York, New London, Groton, Old Mystic, Rte. 169, and Marine Museum.
